On Tuesday, July 19, world’s leading quidditch organizations USQ, MLQ and IQA, announced that they will change the name of the sport, previously known as “quidditch”, to “quadball”.
There are two reasons for this. The first is that the name “quidditch” is trademarked by Warner Bros. and this prevents possible sponsorships and hinders the development of the sport.
The second is the anti-trans stance of J. K. Rowling, the creator of the Harry Potter books. Quidditch is a sport that embraces people of all ethnic groups, genders, languages and cultural backgrounds and brings them together on the field. Rowling’s stance against trans people and the actions she continues to take on this issue are no longer compatible with the quidditch community and its values. For this reason, we fully support the change of the name of the sport and the reasons behind it. It is one of our main missions to create a safe environment for all people regardless of their sex, gender or sexual identity.
However, the visibility and recognition that this sport, which is still practised as an amateur in Turkey, has gained in the last eight years is unfortunately too small to compare with Europe and USA. For this reason, in order not to lose the brand and visibility that we have been working on for years, the quadball activities to be held in Turkey will continue under the name of “quidditch” until our organization decides otherwise
Any team that wants to change the community or team name to “quadball” can change its name at any time by applying to our association. However, we would like to remind you that the Turkish Quidditch Association is responsible for all activities held under the name of “quidditch” or “quadball” in Turkey and that permission from our association should be obtained for all special events.
